In cases where teeth are extracted to relieve a crowding condition, a pontic (an artificial tooth) much like that used in a bridge can be temporarily bonded in place to conceal the resulting space. As the space closes with the orthodontic treatment, the dentist progressively grinds the pontic away until it can be completely removed.
